You may be asking yourself: What to buy in July? The sheer volume of apps can be mind-boggling. (Or, as Will Ferrell’s character says in Blades of Glory, mind-‘bottling’.) For me, checking out new apps is like being taken to the candy store for the first time. Which candies do I like? Should I try any new ones? Which candies do my friends like? What about that candy in the shiny wrapper? Yeah, I know it’s expensive, but it looks real pretty. But will I like it? What if I pay for a bag of sucking candies and they, well, suck?
Ok, so I’m labelling the point here, but you get the idea. Out of all the apps to choose from, how do you discover which ones are right for you? As of May 2015, Android users were able to choose between 1.5 million apps, while Apple’s App Store had 1.4 million available apps. That’s a lot to choose from. But here at Fix My Touch we’re all about service, so here’s the lowdown on the Apple and Android’s top five best new apps for July.
iOS: MUSICAL.LY – Sync along to your favourite tunes
Fan of the lip sync battles on Jimmy Fallon? Then check out Musical.ly, a new iOS app that lets you create your own lip sync videos. Browse millions of tracks to create your own lip sync videos to your favourite songs, then share them with your friends on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp, and Vine. Fun features include slow and fast motion options, and time-lapses. A fun way to waste some time.
iOS: TOSSUP – So where are we going again?
Sometimes it’s a nightmare getting all of your friends on the same page about where to go and what to do. The new app, Tossup, despite sounding a bit rude, makes event planning that much easier. Over email or text, you ask a question about where to go or post a suggestion on what to do, and your friends cast votes for or against. Tossup keeps everybody in the loop, but can’t help if your friends are notoriously indecisive. Try and keep the question or statement simple and direct to get your answers faster.
iOS: TINDOG – Do you like dags?
It’s the misunderstood question Brad Pitt asks in the movie Snatch. Well for those of us who do like or love dogs, here’s a new app for you. Tindog, for iOS and Android, aims to connect you with fellow dog lovers in the area. You can browse through recommended profiles and swipe left or right to cast your ‘No’ or ‘Yes’ vote (it’s similar to Tinder in that way). If you and another user both swipe right, then it’s a match and you can discuss a place to meet up and share your canine interests. Ideal for giving you and your dog some company on your daily walk.
iOS: AMAZON CLOUD DRIVE – Cloud Coverage
Simple and effective, this app allows you to connect your iPhone or iPad to the Amazon Cloud service. Amazon Cloud has been around since 2011, so, needless to say, users have been waiting for this app for quite a while.
iOS: SQUARE SIZE – Sizing up your measurements
There’s certainly no lack of platforms to share your pictures on. Problem is that some of these platforms demand that your photo be a perfect square. Cropping is an option (though a tedious one), and sometimes you just love the photo the way it is and you don’t want to crop it. Square Size will add empty spaces to both sides of the photo you are working on, turning it into an even 1:1 block.
ANDROID: GOOGLE PHOTOS – Unlimited potential
With Google Photos, you can backup unlimited photos and videos to Google’s cloud. The app lets you sort your photos by day, or even scroll through the months and years. The app has features that let you use your photos to create collages, animations, even movies. It automatically backs up your photos and videos from your device, so snap away, you won’t run out of space.
ANDROID: WIFIMAPPER – Staying connected
Ever had a WiFi hotspot turn into a coldspot? I hate getting cut off. So after the success of WiFiMapper for iOS, the app is now available on Android too. The app allows you to find WiFi hotspots and view the Wi-Fi hotspots you’ve linked to and find out how much time you’ve spent on that ‘spot’.
ANDROID: SOLID EXPLORER – Love that customisation
Solid Explorer is a classy-looking app offering deep customisation. The OCD-minded among us will love it. Connect your cloud storage services to the app and view all of your files in one place. Dropbox, Google Drive, Box, OneDrive, Sugarsync, Copy, Mediafire, Owncloud, Yandex and Mega are all supported. Try it free for 14 days, after which time you will have to pay $1.99 for an unlock.
ANDROID: FOURSQUARE – Calling all Ubers
Foursquare and Uber are teaming up, with the help of mobile deep-linking Button, to offer Foursquare users a button within the app to call an Uber. The idea is that when you click the map on a business’ Foursquare page, you’ll see the option to travel there with Uber and be able to select the type of vehicle you prefer. For users without the Uber app installed, they will receive a discount on their first ride.
ANDROID: HBO NOW – For your viewing pleasure
