The Samsung Galaxy S9 has been one of the most anticipated Android phones leading up to its recent release on March 16, 2018. Critics are impressed by some of The Galaxy S9’s noteworthy upgrades and differences from the Galaxy S8 Plus and other leading flagship phones, but are they enough?

The Kelowna team at Repair Express has compiled their first impressions and everything you need to know about the Samsung Galaxy S9.

Android AR Emojis

The AR Emojis are a new design feature that competes with the iPhone X’s Animoji feature. The AR Emoji turns your face into an animated character through the front-facing camera.

One of the perks of the AR Emoji is that it can be generated into a standard GIF and shared as an animated sticker pack across platforms, and can even be “pinned” to the S9’s Always-On Display. A partnership with Disney promises users access to legendary characters that can be used for personalized messages. At the date of its release, Mickey and Minnie Mouse are available for users with the promise of more characters from The Incredibles, Zootopia, and Frozen in the coming year.

Dual Aperture Front-Facing Camera

Although the dual aperture front-facing camera has two apertures doing the work, there’s only one lens. The camera is designed to physically switch between two settings; a narrower F2.4 for sharper and brightly lit shots, and a wider F1.5 aperture for low-light photography.

This design feature means it takes up minimal space on the phone surface, let in more light, reduce image noise and generally make your photos a lot better.

Camera testing site DxOMark awarded the Galaxy S9 Plus the highest score ever to a mobile camera in the photo category. Some of the strongest features to the larger S9 are its excellent noise control, bright and vivid colour reproduction, and overall shooting quality.

Smartphone Unlocking Features

Galaxy S9’s biometrics verification system, Intelligent Scan, integrates facial recognition unlocking with iris scanning, both found on the Galaxy S8. The Galaxy S9 uses the facial recognition, then checks your irises to identify the user. Although this feature is convenient and effective, it does not provide a high level of security for users. It has a long way to go in order to stand a chance next to the iPhone X’s Face ID.

The fingerprint sensor, which appeared on the Galaxy S8, has received significant improvements on the Galaxy S9. Users that were frustrated with placement of the fingerprint scanner on the Galaxy S8 will be glad to know it has been placed below the camera, which makes it far easier to reach.
