The iPhone 6 hasn’t been on the market long, but Apple isn’t sitting still. The expected unveiling of the iPhone 6s is this Fall. Rumoured features for the 6s include: A9 processor; 2GB RAM; improved 13-megapixel camera; same design as the iPhone 6; Force Touch; improved Touch ID; and gold, rose gold, silver, and space grey colours to choose from. Is this just idle gossip or is there actually some substance to these rumours? Let’s check it out.
S IS FOR SPEED
The iPhone 6s is the anticipated successor to the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus and will – like other models in the S-category – be distinguished by its marginally better internal hardware. Rumours are that the 6s will have a new iOS 9 A9 processor and more RAM. In addition, the 6s will get a faster graphics chip, allowing it to better utilise the mobile graphic hardware. It’s therefore a good guess to expect the cameras on the front and back of the device to be improved as well. Probably an enhanced touch screen with Force Touch.
DESIGN – SIMILAR BUT DIFFERENT
The design of the 6s is expected to remain largely similar to that of the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus. The device will likely be available in the same three colours as its predecessors: space grey, silver and gold, with the possible addition of rose gold. Storage will range from 16, 64, to 128GB. Although no official announcement has been made, it is likely that, similar to the iPhone 6, the 6s will come in two versions: one with a 4.7 inch screen and a larger model with a 5.5 inch screen (which might be the 6s Plus). The latest reports are that the 4.7 inch will make do with a regular scratch resistant screen while the larger 5.5 inch will have a display with a protective coating sapphire glass. It’s estimated that the resolutions will be 1334 by 750 pixels and 1920 by 1080 pixels. Little is known about the design and look of the 6s case. However, we expect that Apple will use a familiar size and weight. We expect the 6s will have a sturdier casing and an improved screen.
As for the camera, it is rumoured the 6s will have a big upgrade. The iPhone 6 and 6 Plus have a 8-megapixel rear camera and a 1.2 megapixel front camera. The 6s may have a 13-megapixel camera and focuse faster and perform better in low light situations. There’s also rumours about it having a dual-lens camera, for an even clearer and sharper resolution, but such a feature would require a considerable redesign of the iPhone and mean ditching the current design found on the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. So we don’t think the rumours about a dual-lens camera are accurate.
Our best guess is that Apple is planning to release the iPhone 6s in September 2015. The mass production of both the 4.7 and the 5.5-inch model is probably already underway. Most likely the iPhone 6s will be announced in September, with availability to purchase beginning later that month. As yet there are no substantial estimates on the price tag of the 6s.
Please note that Apple is a closed-shop operation and tight-lipped about new releases. Nothing is official until it’s officially announced by them. The guesses we’ve made here though are educated ones, and the analysis we’ve done well researched. Check back soon for more information on the 6s.
